Ex-OFC champion Conor McGregor has proposed Ireland constructing a national reserve of bitcoin. He called on May 9, 2025, in a message published on X to do so would give “power back to the people’s money.” He is competing for presidency As an independent candidate and wants to pay attention to crypto politics.
McGregor’s bitcoin proposal
In its blog post, Ireland should have a reserve of bitcoin in a strategic reserve. He did not specify where the funding would come from or how much it would cost. He just said that a reserve would put back power in the hands of ordinary citizens. He further mentioned that “crypto in its origin was founded to give power back to the people.” That phrase reasoned with the actual prerequisite for bitcoin and decentralization.

An Irish Bitcoin strategic reserve will give power to people’s money.
I will gather a Twitter space to talk about what I want to see changes.

Reaches out to crypto leader
According to reports, McGregor invited experts to cooperate with him. He tagged Anthony Pompliano, hosting Pomp podcast, and requested feedback. He also contacted David Bailey, an expert who consulted former US President Donald Trump on crypto problem. In his answers, said McGregor, “Message me, and let’s talk about my space” and “David message me, let’s talk about your ideas!” His idea is to implement an X Spaces session to develop details.
Political and legal challenges
Ireland must conduct its next presidential election by November 11, 2025, when President Michael D. Higin’s time ends. All initiatives to set up a Bitcoin reserve would require support from legislators and the central bank. Ireland is a member of the European Union, so its monetary policy is linked to the euro. A candidate from a small party that is independent has narrow chances of getting a coalition for this view.
In addition, McGregor disputes a decision on civil law that decided him guilty of sexual abuse. He has also been investigated on allegations of hate speech before. These factors can damage his credibility to voters.

Customer list in crypto
McGregor is not inexperienced in crypto projects, but his previous attempt did not work. In early April 2025, the real game team conducted a 28-hour sale of a symbol with the name REAL. They wanted to collect at least $ 1 million. They collected only about $ 392,300 and refunded all buyers. That flop illustrates how challenging it is to get people to support you, even with a celebrity name on it.
Next step and outlook
McGregor says he will reveal more about his X Spaces session in time. He has not specified a date yet. It is unknown how many experts will accept his offer. Governments that have established Bitcoin reserves are the United States, El Salvador and Bhutan, but these measures came from the highest authorities.
A grassroots initiative of a candidate would be unique in Ireland. Voters will decide if they want a hunting policy that handles complex financial policy. At the moment McGregor’s plan remains at the idea stage and is waiting to be tested in the political arena.
